It Shouldn't Hurt To Be A Child

The focus of the "It Shouldn't Hurt To Be A Child" program is violence prevention and community awareness. This program works with at-risk youth to engage them in pro-social activities. "It Shouldn't Hurt To Be A Child" is a 1 year project funding granted by the United Way of Quinte, which means that every year, the Violence Prevention Worker needs to re-apply for the funds to continue this well-received, popular program.

The purpose of this program is to provide opportunities to these youth with the support and active participation of the community. The primary objective of this program is that when these youth are selecting appropriate options and activities, offered by this program these youth will be more engaged in the school community.

This program provides opportunities for youth that will promote their healthy development. This program has funneled these opportunities to be congruent with the priorities of 'the promotion for healthy development for children and youth'. The program addresses recreational and social development by offering sports activities, cooperative games and peer support for educational opportunities. This program also offers options relating to 'positive social skills, self-esteem and confidence' by offering a variety of clubs that including sewing, woodworking, cooking, and girl's group. The clubs offer alternative peer support systems that these youth may not have access to. These activities take place over lunch hours at local schools, after schools, and the occasional workshop offered during school learning hours.

Through the category of 'engagement in school and learning' this program offers alternative learning options that are geared towards the youth who may not feel supported within this system.

This program also offers skill based activities that support youth in increasing their knowledge and skills. This program aims towards increasing youth support systems and resources that are available within the larger community. All of these activities are coordinated and organized by the Violence Prevention Worker who engages community partnerships and collaborations with both the private and non-private sector.
